Developed in the 1970s by the Mexican government, Cancun became the new vacation spot for domestic and international travelers. But they make Cancun an example of unsustainable tourism. I studied and always promote sustainable tourism, and Cancun is the opposite. If you look at the Yucatan Peninsula or even just Cancun, it was an impressive jungle before tourism exploded in the 80s.
Nature was destroyed to build huge all-inclusive resorts along the coast. These all-inclusive resorts come with environmental challenges, but also social challenges. It is difficult to ensure that they support the local economy and create good opportunities for local people. After experiencing so many different types of activities to please different types of travelers during my vacation in Cancun, it's no longer surprising that Cancun is so popular.
